Softball Team Recognized by NFCA; 12 Players Named NFCA Scholar-Athletes
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – West Chester University's softball squad was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Thursday as that organization announced the schools that were honored as members of the All-Academic for the 2013-14 academic year. West Chester University placed 12th among all Division II schools with an overall team GPA of 3.48, which is 14 spots higher than last year. Out of the 692 honorees in Division II, the Golden Rams had 12 student-athletes honored for maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA, throughout the academic year. Those players named NFCA Scholar-Athletes were J.P. Norris (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford), Jess Schuck (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South), Kelly Anderson (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy), Megan Kelly (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), Jill Murray (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti), Kim Murl (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham), and Kim Begley (Abington, Pa./Abington). West Chester's softball team put together a record season on the diamond as well, winning the Atlantic Region title for the first time in school history and advancing to the Division II national championships in Salem, Va. The Golden Rams won over 40 games for the first time in school history as well. Returning this season as NFCA Scholar-Athletes are senior, Char Conaway (Radnor, Pa./Radnor), and sophomores Sarah Derstine (Telford, Pa./Souderton), Sarah Walasavage (Minersville, Pa./Minersville), and Shannon Gray (West Chester, Pa./Henderson).
