Men’s Soccer Falls to Charleston in Third Round of NCAA Tournament

CHARLESTON, W. VA. – West Chester fell in the third round of the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Tournament this afternoon to host Charleston, 3-0, inside Schoenbaum Stadium. West Chester (14-3-2) made the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons, but fell to Charleston Golden Eagles (18-1-2) for the second consecutive year. Charleston now heads to the Elite Eight for the fourth straight season. Charleston had a great opportunity early on with Thomas Vancaeyezeele's header right in front of the net, but it was saved by senior goalkeeper Matt Palmer (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) at 27:22 in the first half. Shortly after, Charleston's Williams N'Dah converted a header to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage (31:18). Momentum swung Charleston's way as they struck again roughly a minute later to make it a two score game. This time it was Armando Tikvic who registered the goal. Both goals were assisted by Patrick Guier. At the half, Charleston managed to have a 7-1 edge in shots with three being on goal. Charleston tacked on another goal at the 73:04 mark to make it 3-0. Registering the goal was Freddie Tracey with the assist going to Ettore Ballestracci. The Golden Eagles at the end of regulation collected a 12-3 advantage in shots, helping them advance to the next round. Palmer finished the match with three saves for the Golden Rams. Notes The 14 victories this season was the most since head coach Kendall Walkes' squad in 2006 (14-5-1). Palmer's 13 victories as goalkeeper ties Andrew Shafear (2004) for the most wins in a single season. In Division II, West Chester now has a 1-3 record in the NCAA Tournament after the loss to Charleston.
