Speller Shines as West Chester Wins First Conference Contest

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – R-Fr., G Porscha Speller (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) shined in her collegiate debut, propelling West Chester to an 89-69 victory over PSAC East rival Millersville, Wednesday night inside Hollinger Field House. This victory marks the first time since 1992 that West Chester (3-0, 1-0 PSAC East) defeated Millersville (2-1, 0-1) by a 20-point margin or better. A significant factor in the game was the play of Speller, who contributed 17 points, four assists and three steals for the Golden Rams off the bench. The contest was a tale of two halves as there were several lead changes between the two squads in the opening 20 minutes. Millersville trailed by six at the half. But once the second half hit, the Golden Rams grabbed all the momentum moving forward. At the 15-minute mark, the Golden Rams went on a 6-0 run that was by ignited their defensive pressure. West Chester's press forced the Marauders into 26 turnovers in the contest as the Rams ended the game on a 29-19 run. During that span, Speller attacked the paint, creating space for other players on the squad. Sharpshooter, Dallas Ely (Montrose, Pa./Montrose) capitalized on her opportunities with a team-leading 21 points and three rebounds. From behind the arc, West Chester shot 41.7 percent, compared to Millersville's 18.2 percent. Coming off a recent PSAC player of the week honor, Brittany Sicinski (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) continued her strong play by chipping in 12 points while dishing out four assists. Crashing the glass were Serifat Junaid (Chesilhurst, N.J./Camden Catholic) and Mariah Powell (Glen Mills, Pa./Rustin) who each added 11 points and six boards. The Golden Rams continue their home stand inside Hollinger Field House this Saturday, November 22 against Kutztown University at 1 p.m.
