Miller Propels WCU Past Mercyhurst in 2OT

West Chester, Pa. – Freshman Brett Miller (Washington Crossing, Pa./Council Rock North) found the back of the net to propel West Chester (3-0-0, 2-0-0 PSAC) past Mercyhurst in double overtime Friday afternoon. Miller's first collegiate goal with 4:32 remaining in double overtime marks the only time the Golden Rams had the lead in the match. Mercyhurst (1-2-0, 0-1-0 PSAC) did strike first with Thom Derks scoring early in the first period. The Lakers controlled the ball for much of the half. Momentum swung West Chester's way in the second half, taking a 9-5 advantage in shots. The Golden Rams were able to tie the game up on an Andrew Slater (Hanover, Pa./South West) throw in from the near side of the field. Slater's throw was directly into a big scramble in front of net, where he was able to connect with freshman Kyle Hoops (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley). Mercyhurst's goalkeeper Alex Brems made four saves, while giving up a pair of goals in the match. James Wood (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) recorded six saves in net, earning his third win of the season for the Golden Rams. The sophomore allowed one goal in 105 minutes of play. The Golden Rams return to Rockwell Field tomorrow as they face off against another PSAC opponent in Gannon University at 1:00 p.m.
