Athletes of the Week in October
October 3rd:
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Krause (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) was extraordinary this past week, setting a Division II school record with 15 saves as the 10th-ranked West Chester University upset No. 2 East Stroudsburg, 3-1, in a PSAC matchup on Wednesday. Krause’s performance broke her own school record of 13 saves, while also establishing a new career best with those 15 saves in the victory. On Saturday, Krause continued to impress with 10 saves despite falling to Indiana (Pa.) 3-2 in overtime. Overall, Krause totaled 25 saves in a pair of matches for the Golden Rams.
Drew Patterson (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) is slated third overall at the Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational at the Whispering Woods Golf Course. The senior recorded the low score for West Chester Sunday afternoon. Patterson’s performance helped propel the Golden Rams in round one to a first-place finish. This is Patterson’s first athlete of the week award this season. West Chester University's men's golf will continue action Monday morning.
October 10th:
Senior Norman Patten (Warminster, Pa./Council Rock South) excelled at the 2016 PSAC Individual Championships this weekend, reaching the championship match for singles.In the first round, Patten topped his opponent from Millersville, 6-0, 6-1. The senior continued his strong play in the second round, advancing past Edinboro's Mateus Santos 6-4, 6-2. Afterwards, Patten carried that momentum and defeated Mercyhurst’s Joaquin Aguilera (Mer) 4-6, 6-2, (10-6) to reach the final and notch his third win of the tournament. Patten would eventually fall to the No. 1 seed in the tournament in the final. Vitor Albanese of Edinboro won by a score of 6-0, 2-6, (10-8) in the championship match.
Senior midfielder Scarlett Walsh (Philadelphia, Pa. / Archbishop Ryan) contributed a pair of goals to lift the No. 11 Golden Rams past hosting IUP (Pa.), 3-1, Saturday afternoon. In their only game this week, Walsh knocked in the first goal of the contest in addition to providing the go-ahead goal to seal the victory. Walsh’s stellar play has sparked the Golden Rams’ attack, leading the squad with seven goals and 16 points. The senior’s production is one of the reasons why West Chester remains undefeated (11-0-0, 11-0 PSAC).
October 17th:
Drew Patterson (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) earned his second athlete of the week nomination for his performance this past weekend at the 2016 PSAC Championships in Hershey. Patterson was clicking on all cylinders, shooting a four-over-par 146 for the 36-hole event. His efforts tied Indiana (Pa.) Max Kirsch for first place individually. However, he would lose in a playoff at the 16th pin to Kirsch. Meanwhile, the squad finished as the runner-up with a score of 605 at the PSAC Championship.
Fr., forward Jenny Bail (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was extraordinary this week, accumulating four points and helping the Golden Rams win a pair of conference games to remain undefeated (13-0, 13-0 PSAC). On Tuesday, Bail registered the game-winning goal with 45 seconds left to lead No. 5 West Chester to victory. Bail’s last minute heroics proved to be the difference as the Golden Rams topped East Stroudsburg 1-0. On Saturday, the freshman setup a pair of teammates to tally two assists in a 2-1 win over Slippery Rock in overtime. First, Bail found senior captain Kara Parvel to knot the game up at one apiece with four seconds remaining in the contest. Bail was not finished yet, connecting with teammate Julianne Minutillo who found the back of the net in overtime.
October 24:
Pat Moriarty (Gladwyne, Pa./Harriton) tossed three touchdown passes to propel the Golden Rams to a 46-12 victory over Cheyney on Homecoming at John A. Farrell Stadium Saturday.The junior quarterback went 10-19 for 130 yards and three touchdowns in the game. His first touchdown pass of the afternoon came in with the second quarter, connecting with Simon Williams from 25 yards out. Later in the quarter, Moriarty found an open Jordan Banks in the end zone to increase West Chester’s lead before the half. His last touchdown of the day was a 18 yard strike to Tyler Karpinski.

Rachal Toppi (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) registered five goals for ten points in a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victories this past week. Toppi tallied a hat trick in a 5-1 win over host Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the week, the junior forward scored a pair of goals to defeat Mansfield. Toppi continues to lead the Golden Rams’ attack, increasing her team-leading goal total to 19 on the season.The forward is one of the reasons why West Chester remains in a tie for third place with Millersville while stretching its winning streak to five straight games.

October 31:
Providing three trys en route to a 93-10 victory over Molloy College on senior day was wing Sophia Schwab for women’s rugby. The senior ranks in the top four in terms of all-time scoring in program history for the Golden Rams. She has amassed 45 trys for 311 points in her stellar career. West Chester captured a 6-3 in its fall campaign.
Junior midfielder Brett Glasco (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) registered a pair of goals and an assist for five points to lead the Golden Rams to a 3-1 victory over host Seton Hill on Saturday. The midfielder blasted a shot from the left side of the goal, which was deflected and rolled in off of Seton Hill's goalkeeper. This gave West Chester an early 1-0 lead at the 10:48 mark. Glasco capitalized on a two-on-one opportunity that presented itself in the second half for his second goal of the match and to seal the victory. The West Chester University Golden Rams clinched the No. 2 seed and a quarterfinal bye in next weeks PSAC Tournament.
