Torresin Shines, but Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester's women's basketball dropped its first game of the season to Glenville State, 112-85, as they kicked off the 31st annual Carol Eckman Classic inside Hollinger Field House Saturday night. Jr., Forward Madison Torresin (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) posted a career high 27 points for the Golden Rams in the loss. Additionally, she chipped in 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. West Chester (0-1) trailed for the majority of the contest as Glenville State's up-tempo approach forced 35 Golden Ram turnovers. The Pioneers (1-0) went on a 19-8 run in the last six minutes run to give them a 57-38 led at the half. Julie Bishop led Glenville State offensively, providing 18 points, including six shots from behind the arc. Every time it appeared West Chester gained momentum, Glenville State went down the other end and hit a three. The run-and-gun style of allowed Glenville State to shoot the lights out in the second half. They were 20-50 from downtown for a 40 three-point percentage However, this young squad attacked the paint. West Chester shot 18-22 from the free throw line for an 81.8 percentage. Senior captain Mariah Traywick (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) made an impact in the paint, registering 12 points six rebounds, and a block. This was the most points that the Golden Rams have given up since a loss in double overtime to Clarion back in 2000-2001. West Chester returns tomorrow for the second day of the classic, taking on Wheeling Jesuit at 4 P.M. inside Hollinger Field House.
