Women’s Basketball Falls to Wheeling Jesuit in Carol Eckman Classic
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – On the second day of the Carol Eckman Classic, West Chester would fall to visiting Wheeling Jesuit, 83-60, inside Hollinger Field House Sunday afternoon. This was the first matchup between the two squads since Wheeling Jesuit (2-0) knocked out the Golden Rams (0-2) in the NCAA tournament last season. The Cardinals were in control from the opening tip, going on a 23-0 run to begin the game. Wheeling Jesuit's point guard Monica Burns had the hot hand, contributing 21 points including six three-pointers. Overall, their team shot 43.9% from the field and 57.1% from downtown. The Golden Rams tried to claw their way back into the game, but the superb shooting of Wheeling Jesuit kept the game out of reach. Jr., Forward Madison Torresin (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) registered her second consecutive double-double to begin the 2016 season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Running the offense was Porscha Speller (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), who added a team-high 13 points and four assists. West Chester struggled from the field capturing a 33.9 percentage from the field and only 21.1 percent from behind the arc. Others contributing were senior forward Tori Smick (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) with 11 points and sophomore guard Alexis Anderson (Allentown, Pa. / Louis E. Dieruff) chipping in 12. Coach Wooden's squad is young and gained some value game experience this weekend. The Golden Rams continue their home stand as they begin conference play at home against Gannon University inside Hollinger Field House on Saturday, November 19th at 1 p.m.
