Women’s Rugby Falls to Quinnipiac in NIRA Postseason Tournament
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester managed to enter the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) postseason tournament as the seventh seed, but would fall to visiting Quinnipiac University in the opening round, 94-15, Saturday afternoon. The Quinnipiac Bobcats (9-1) came into the match as second seed in the tournament, but did not host the game due to not having a home field. Senior Lizzy Groff (Glenmoore, Pa. / Downingtown East) provided the Golden Rams (6-4) with an early 5-0 lead less than two minutes into the match. However, Quinnipiac would go on a run by registering the next five trys. West Chester's Aalea Ray (Landisville, Pa. / Hempfield) cut into the deficit at the 21:55 mark. The junior raced down the near sideline from 45-meters out to record the try. From that point forward, the Bobcats took control of the contest for the victory. Sophomore Emily Roskopf contributed a team-high six trys for 30 points. Groff did score right before the 80th minute for West Chester, giving the senior the first and last points of the contest. The Golden Rams conclude their 2016 fall campaign with a 6-4 record and will return in the spring, beginning with the Crimson 7's Tournament held in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
