Shippensburg Edges West Chester to Take Sole Possession of First in PSAC East

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – In a battle for sole possession of first-place in the PSAC East, Shippensburg came out on top by a final score of 82-48 inside Heiges Field House on Wednesday night. West Chester (5-9, 5-5 PSAC) struggled from the floor tonight, resulting in a total of 48 points. Head coach Kiera Wooden's team shot 38.9 percent (21-54) from the field and only a 6.7 percentage (1-15) from behind the arc. The last time the Golden Rams did not reach 50 points in a contest occurred at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a 61-42 loss during the 2011-12 season. Meanwhile, Shippensburg (11-5, 6-4 PSAC) was hitting on all cylinders, knocking down 51.8 percent of its shots from the field (29-56). From downtown, the Raiders provided a 46.2 percentage by being 6 for 13. The squad also got to the charity stripe, going 18 of 20 from the free throw line (90%). The Raiders extended their winning streak to six-games with the victory tonight to edge out the Golden Rams. Shippensburg truly took over this game late in the first quarter, ending on a 4-0 run to obtain an 19-10 advantage. The Raiders carried that momentum into the second quarter, going on a 16-2 run over a span of eight minutes. Overall, Shippensburg outscored the Golden Rams 23-5 in that quarter to give them a comfortable 42-15 advantage at the half and capture the win. Jr., F Madison Torresin (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the Golden Rams with a team-high 14 points, eight rebounds, and a pair of steals. This was the fifth consecutive game that Torresin reach double-figures in the scoring column. In the backcourt, fellow junior Porscha Speller (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) added eight points and five rebounds. West Chester does hold a 3-2 advantage in the last five meetings with the Raiders. The Golden Rams will look to rebound as they return home for a three-game home stand inside Hollinger Field House, beginning with Cheyney on Saturday at 1 p.m.
