Kutztown Fends off West Chester on Senior Day, 72-59
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester dropped a 72-59 decision to visiting Kutztown in the regular-season finale inside Hollinger Field House Saturday afternoon. In the opening moments of the PSAC East match-up, Kutztown's Jenna Altomare hit a three and later helped her team gather an early 10-point advantage at the end of the first quarter. West Chester (10-16, 10-12 PSAC) would claw its way back in it, cutting the lead down to six midway through the third quarter. However, the Golden Bears (13-17, 10-12 PSAC) responded with a 13-0 run over a three-minute span to put the game out of reach. Kutztown would never trail in this one, particularly due to the play of Altomare who tallied a game high 23 points. Kutztown shot the ball well from the field, going 47.4 percent from the floor (27-57) and 50 percent from behind the arc (7-14). Meanwhile, West Chester (10-16, 10-12 PSAC) struggled to find a rhythm offensively. The squad went 41.1 percent from the floor (23-56), 22.2 percent from downtown (2-9), and 84.6 from the free throw line (11-13). Leading the way for the Golden Rams in this one was senior Mariah Traywick (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford). Traywick manufactured a team-high 11 points to go along with eight rebounds. In the pair of games this week, Traywick provided 26 points, 20 rebounds, three blocks, and a pair of steals. After registering a career-high 25 points on Wednesday against Millersville, red-shirt freshman Rylee Power (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) produced eight points while junior Camden Boehner (Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) added eight points as well. A bright spot for head coach Kiera Wooden was that her team received contributions from several players with 31 total bench points. Prior to the game, the women's basketball team recognized its trio of seniors as a part of Senior Day. The three seniors on the team were Courtney Wanner (Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East), Tori Smick (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown), and Traywick. West Chester has now completed the regular season and will host the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Monday as the number four seed. The Golden Rams are set to face number five Bloomsburg inside Hollinger Field House with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
