West Chester Completes 4-Game Sweep against East Stroudsburg
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – For the second consecutive day, West Chester swept a PSAC East baseball doubleheader from East Stroudsburg at Serpico Stadium by final scores of 6-3 and 12-2. The Golden Rams (12-3, 4-0 PSAC) have now won their first four games of conference play to extend their winning streak to six-games. A four run sixth was the difference in game one with that rally resulting in four runs off of five hits and a pair of East Stroudsburg errors (10-10, 0-4 PSAC). Jared Melone's (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) started the rally with an RBI double to right center. Teammate, Shane Dressler (York Haven, Pa./Red Land) singled to knock Melone in to keep the inning alive. So., Drew Jarmuz (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) provided an RBI single, while Clay Harwick (Lansdale, Pa./Methacton) added the last run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Jr., Mike Cipolla (Newark, De / Charter School of Wilmington) got the start on the mound and was effective by throwing four-innings of no-hit ball against East Stroudsburg. West Chester gave its pitcher some run support in the fifth frame with a pair of runs to give themselves a 2-0 advantage. Anthony Salomone (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) singled through the left side to score teammate Zach Sheranko (Tannersville, Pa./Pocono Mountain East). Afterwards, Joey Coyle (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) provided a single of his own to extend the lead. However, East Stroudsburg responded in the top half of the sixth to even the game at two apiece. Cipolla went 5.2 innings while giving up 4 hits and two earned runs. One of which came from a wild pitch when reliever Josh McClain (3-0) (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) came into the game with bases load. He would get the team out of the jam and go onto to register his third win of the season after West Chester tallied four runs in the sixth. In the night cap, West Chester's bats came alive by posting 12 runs off of 12 hits. That is the most runs this season since a 20-15 victory against Philadelphia University back in February. In the bottom of the first, the Golden Rams' grabbed four early runs to take a commanding lead. A double by Jarmuz down the right field line pushed the lead to 4-0 after back-to-back RBI singles by Joe Sheeran (Springfield, Pa. / Springfield) and Sheranko. East Stroudsburg did get on the scoreboard in the third with two runs, but West Chester answered by scoring three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to seal it. Andrew Gernert (2-0) (Lenhartsville, Pa. / Kutztown) tallied the win in game two by going six innings while giving up four hits, two runs (one earned), and striking out eight. Sheranko finished the game 3-3 with a triple, while both Jarmuz and Melone came away 2-3 with a pair of doubles. Jarmuz in the doubleheader went 3-6 with a team-high 4 RBIs. West Chester turns toward the road in its next matchup against non-conference opponent Wilmington University (Del.) on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
