West Chester Baseball Splits Series with Shippensburg; Jarmuz Wins it for WCU in Game 2
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – So., OF Drew Jarmuz (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) smacked a game-winning single to left field to lift West Chester past Shippensburg, 2-1, in game two of a doubleheader held at Serpico Stadium this afternoon. West Chester (14-5, 6-2) stole game two with Jarmuz's eighth inning heroics, while Shippensburg (9-13-1, 4-4 PSAC) took game one by a final score of 10-1. Jared Melone (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) started the eighth inning with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a Shane Dressler (York Haven, Pa. / Red Land) single through the right side. Jarmuz proceed by taking a pitch to left to seal it. However, it was freshman catcher Corey Webb (Easton, Pa. / Easton) that gave the team a spark in the second inning to earn a 1-0 lead. Webb legged out a double and scored the next at-bat with Joey Coyle's (Wilmington, De. / Salesianum) RBI triple to right center. Sr., RHP Josh McClain (4-0) (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) notched his fourth win of the season, coming in relief. The reliever went 3.1 innings, while only surrendering three hits. McClain held Shippensburg scoreless to allow West Chester to prevail in extras. McClain relieved fellow senior Andrew Gernert (Lenhartsville, Pa. / Kutztown) in the fifth inning when he got into some trouble. Gernert provided 4.2 strong innings for the Golden Rams, allowing four hits for one earned run. Game one was all Shippensburg as the Raiders took control with a seven run second. Jr., Mike Cipolla (Newark, De / Charter School of Wilmington) got the start for the Golden Rams, but exited after 1.2 innings. Due to an error, all of Shippensburg's runs in the inning were unearned. Shippensburg capped off its seven run second with a grand slam by Jake Kennedy. The lone run in the game for West Chester came off the bat of Anthony Salomone (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York), who took a pitch over the left field fence for his third homerun of the season. West Chester continues its homestand with a doubleheader against PSAC East rival on Friday at Serpico Stadium with first pitch at 1 p.m.
