Hayward & Johansson Named to the Academic All-Area Women's Swimming & Diving Team
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – West Chester's Tess Hayward (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and Emelie Johansson (Taby, Sweden) have been selected to the 2017 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's Swimming & Diving team, as voted on by the sports information offices of the 30 colleges and universities in the Philadelphia area. Of the 10 spots available, Hayward and Johansson of West Chester's women's squad received recognition on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's Swimming & Diving Team. Hayward was a unanimous selection to the Academic All-Area team in her senior campaign, after being named the Performer of the Year a season ago. The only other unanimous selection was Villanova's Darby Goodwin, who went on to earn the Performer of the Year in 2017. She registered three individual top-six finishes at the NCAA Division II Championships. The senior propelled the Golden Rams to an eighth-place in the NCAAs. She continues to pile on honors considering that she claimed the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) female swimmer of the year and was named to the PSAC Winter Top 10 list for the second straight season. Earning a spot on the list for the first in her career was Johansson. The sophomore played a role in West Chester's ability to win its 11 consecutive PSAC Swimming Championship. She produced runner-up in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.22) and was fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:06.85). At Nationals, she was a part of the 400 medley relay team that took 13th (3:49.35). Hayward holds a 3.86 cumulative GPA in Special Education through last fall. She is a PSAC honor roll student, member of the Dean's List at West Chester University and a D2 Athletic Director's Association all-academic recipient as well. Johansson on the other hand generated a 3.81 GPA with a major of Business Marketing.
