West Chester’s Michael Oliver Named All-Academic Performer of the Year

GLENSIDE, Pa. – West Chester senior Michael Oliver (Howell, NJ / Freehold Twp.) earned the 2016-17 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Swimming & Diving Performer of the Year in addition to being one of the 10 student-athletes selected to the Philadelphia InquirerAcademic All-Area Men's Swimming & Diving Team. The team is nominated and voted on by the sports information offices of 30 colleges and universities in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. This was the second consecutive year that Oliver made the All-Area team, while being the first time he claimed Performer of the Year. Oliver produced three All-America citations at the 2017 NCAA Division II Championships as the squad finished 18th out of the 32 teams at the meet. He finished sixth in the 400 individual medley (3:53.16), seventh in 200-breaststroke (1:57.18) and tied for 14th in the 100 breaststroke (54.59) for an honorable mention at the national championships. The senior played a significant role in West Chester's ability to have won 19 consecutive PSAC championships. During the championships, the New Jersey native clocked in winnings times for the 100 and 200 breaststroke as well as the 400 individual medley. His time of 1:57.50 in the 200 breaststroke set a PSAC Championship record. He was named the PSAC's Men's Swimmer of the Week twice in his senior season, and broke pool records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at Johns Hopkins University. Oliver holds a 3.49 cumulative GPA in Health and Physical Education through last fall semester as well.
