Men’s Soccer Places Fives Players on All-PSAC; Michael Benn Coach of the Year
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Five members of West Chester's men's soccer team received Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) all-conference honors in 2017, while head coach Michael Benn earned Coach of the Year. The 2017 All-PSAC teams were announced Tuesday afternoon. Head coach Michael Benn was named the PSAC Coach of Year in his fifth season at the helm. This was his second major award, following his coach of the year plaudit in 2013, as the Golden Rams finished with a 13-2-2 record. During the regular season, West Chester captured the regular season title with a perfect 11-0-0 record in conference action. It marked the first ever title as well as the best conference record in program history. Receiving all-league honors for the Golden Rams were Matt Palmer, Brett Glasco, Tim French, and Kyle Hoops. Freshman Doug Goitia claimed second team honors. Sr., GK Matt Palmer (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) had a senior campaign to remember, rewriting the West Chester record books. Palmer posted a 12-1-2 record in 1,390 minutes of action in-between the pipes. He compiled 34 saves, while only surrendering seven goals in 2017. His 17 career shutouts placed him first all-time in team history. Meanwhile, the senior registered 12 wins and nine shutouts this year, which marks the most in a single-season in program history. Over his tenure, Palmer has recorded 25 wins to place him fifth in team history. Sr., M Brett Glasco (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) appeared in and started all 17 matches for the Golden Rams this season. He was tied for second in goals at four and was in three-way tie for first in points with 10. The captain played a pivotal role for West Chester over his tenure. Defensively, the combination of senior Tim French (Bensalem, Pa. /Holy Ghost Prep) and junior Kyle Hoops (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) prevented the opposition from shots on goal. These two contributed towards a 0.65 goals scored per game average. Additionally, they limited the opposition to 8.4 shots per contest. French appeared in and started all 17 matches for the Golden Rams. He leads the squad in minutes played at 1,559. The senior has chipped in a pair of goals for four points this season. This is the second first team all conference selection for French, who earned it back in 2016. Meanwhile, Hoops has similar statistics to French. He is second on the squad in minutes (1,512) and generated four points (2 goals). Hoops does have a game winning goal in 2017, which propelled West Chester over Slippery Rock late in the season. Fr., F Doug Goitia (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) earned second team in his freshman campaign. Goitia led the squad in scoring, producing five goals for the Golden Rams. Two of which were game winners over Mercyhurst and Shippensburg. He finished the regular season tied for first in points (10) with teammates Jason Pixley and Glasco.
